Sand Sifting Sea Star

Sand Sifting Sea Star

(Astropecten polycanthus)

Native Origin:
These are found near the Tonga and Fiji islands.

Purchase Info:
Two of these were purchased from "Preuss Animal House" on February 9,  2003.

Special Requirements:
They require a deep bottom substrate in which to feed and hide.   They move along the bottom, using their spines and burrows nto the substrate to digest it's food.

Comments:
These are not known to climb, although mine are commonly seen near the top of the glass.  So apparently they can climb, to a limited extent.
